Gifts Mother’s Day as we know it is a relatively recent holiday, though it is not a “Hallmark holiday” designed to sell more cards. There are a number of Mothering day or mommy-focused holidays in history like Mothering Day in the UK, Cybele in ancient Greece, or Mothering Sunday in much of Europe. Mother’s Day was developed by Anna Jarvis in 1912. Mother’s day was specifically chosen to be a singular possessive meaning it was meant for each family to honor their mother, not plural possessive that would be used to commemorate all the mothers of the world.
